Lasik Surgery Patient Facing Misdemeanor Charge

STOW -- Lasik eye surgery could cost patients more than medical bills if they do not visit their local BMV soon after the procedure.

Drivers who wear glasses or contacts have certain restrictions on their license, and when they undergo lasik surgery they are required to go back to the BMV and get those restrictions removed.

Meredith Crock, 24, had no idea of these requirements until she was pulled over two weeks ago.
"I was driving back from South Carolina and I got pulled over for speeding which is fine I was speeding," she explained. "(The trooper) asked me if I was wearing my contacts and I recently just had lasik surgery so my answer was no."

Crock was then handed an additional citation for not visiting the BMV after her surgery to get her vision restriction on her license removed.

"I didn't know how serious it was until this," said Crock, who was also ordered to make a court appearance earlier this week and is now facing a misdemeanor charge.

According to State Highway Patrol drivers who have had lasik are encouraged to get their vision retested at the BMV as soon as possible.

Citations are handed out at the trooper's discretion, so drivers should carry proof of their surgery and improved vision until they are able to get their license changed.

"I think a lot of people would make the same mistake," said Crock.

  • Without his bottle-thick glasses, all he could see was 'blobs in a room'.

  • But since undergoing the procedure last year Michael has managed to ramp up his weight loss efforts and has been left transformed.

Hammond Eye Center Offers New Laser Technology

June 26, 2013 - HAMMOND | The Williams-Deschamps Eye Institute has started offering the latest FDA-approved technology for custom cataract surgery.
The LensX Femtosecond Laser allows surgeons to customize procedures using a patient's unique characteristics, which will optimize post-operative vision
Cataract patients typically undergo surgery to remove the cloudy lens from inside the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens implant called an intraocular lens.
Drs. Ann and Douglas Williams and Dr. Eldi Deschamps can use the new laser equipment for the surgery.
The laser technique pulses in a femtosecond, which is one quadrillionth of a second. It also allows for the correction of low to moderate amounts of astigmatism with the accuracy of a computer-controlled laser.
It also provides greater surgical precision, eliminates the need for blades and needles and allows surgeons to customize a treatment plan.

What is Lasik?

Lasik stands for “LASER-IN-SITU Keratomileusis” where in a Microkeratome or the laser beam (Intralase) creates a hinged corneal flap and laser beams then gently reshape the corneal bed and the flap is put back in position, which is a absolutely painless procedure.

Lasik is an out patient laser surgical procedure used to correct myopia (near sight), Hyperopia (far sight) and Astigmatism. Why should you consider Lasik? For many years the only way people could correct their vision was to wear spectacles.

Over the last forty years, contact lenses have become increasingly popular as their design and availability has improved. Lasik has rapidly gained acceptance as a realistic alternative and enabled millions world wide to enjoy a new found freedom living lives without the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses.

What are the types of lasik procedure?

a) Customised lasik procedure:- Customised technology will measure and correct irregularities in the optical system of the eye. Customised is much more advanced and sophisticated from the regular lasik procedure. In the worlds largest study evaluation of patient data comparing Customised treatment with standard lasik, Customised patients had significantly better vision than patients who underwent standard lasik.

b) The Intralase method:- “the blade free lasik experience”. The intralase method is a 100% blade free approach to creating your corneal flap, the then flap of the tissue that the doctor folds back in order to perform your lasik procedure. Traditionally doctor’s have used an instrument called a microkeratome for the creation of corneal flaps. The microkeratome is a hand-held blade that moves across the eye, cutting the corneal flap as it goes,  The Intralase method, by contrast enables your doctor to create your corneal flap without a blade ever touching your eye. The Intralase flap creation process takes almost 15 to 30 seconds. When lasik is complete, a flap created using the Intralase method is uniquely able to “LOCK” back into place. Your eye begins to rapidly heal. The intralase method also delivers outstanding visual results, patients report better quality of vision overall, particularly in terms of their ability to see well in low light, such as at dusk or at night.  Who are the patients not fit for lasik procedure?· Patients with very thin corneas·  High refractive errors. (more than -14.0 D sphere· Unstable refraction.·

Patients with ocular problems like Keretoconus (thin & irregular corneas), dry eye, past history of infections, etc. Retina detachment & other hereditary retinal problems. Is there any proven record? The integrated approach that Customised 100 brings to LASIK has helped eye surgeons achieve a much higher standard of visual accuracy, precision and safety in LASIK treatments. Many leading eye centres in the world adopt Customised integrated system. In just over two years, over 100,000 LASIK procedures have been performed with Customised.  What is the age limit? Any person above the age of 18 years is a good candidate for lasik surgery. The glass / contact lens power should have been stable for the last 12 months.  How long will the procedure take? The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. You may have to spend a total of 2-3 hours in the hospital. When can I get back to work? You should be able to get back to work in 3-4 days. Both the eyes can be done on the same day. Is it necessary to undergo repeat procedure? In the rare event of an under correction or regression you may have to undergo a repeat procedure, at no extra cost. This depends on your corneal thickness and other factors which your surgeon decides.

Will the procedure hurt? The lasik procedure itself is completely painless i.e. no injections. It is done using eye drops only. After the procedure you may have a mild discomfort in the form of a foreign body and watering sensation for a few hours.  What are the risks? The chances of having vision reducing complications are less than 1%. There have been no reported cases of blindness from lasik so far. Some people may experience fluctuation in vision, glare and haloes at night which usually reduces with time. Patient over the age of 40 will require reading glasses. There are some rare complication (0.5%) like corneal ectasia, flap problem etc. “over I million lasik procedures have been performed world over in the last 10 years. What should I expect before during and after LASIK surgery?

BEFORE SURGERY:- once you have decided to go ahead with lasik surgery, you will require a baseline evaluation by your doctor to determine if you are a good candidate. You should not feel pressurized by your doctor, family friends or anyone else to make a decision about having surgery. You should undergo only if you are totally convinced. If you are wearing contact lenses it is necessary to stop wearing them before your baseline evaluation and switch to wearing your glasses full time. Lasik is not done during pregnancy and loctation; clarify all your doubts and anxieties with the doctor. The day before surgery, you should stop using creams, lotions, make-up or perfumes. Arrange to be driven back after surgery as driving is not possible immediately after surgery. During surgery an anaesthetic drop will be put in your eye and the area around your eye will be cleaned. During the procedure your vision will dim and you may experience some discomfort. To keep your eye fixed you will be asked to stare at a light.

AFTER SURGERY:- Once the eye is fixed the doctor will start the laser. A computer controls the amount of laser delivered to your eyes. After surgery Immediately after the procedure, your eye may burn, itch or feel like there is something in it. You may experience some discomfort, or in some case, mild pain. Both the eyes may tear or water. Your vision will probably be hazy or blurry. Never rub your eyes as rubbing could disturb the flap in the first week. You may also experience sensitivity to light, glare or haloes around lights. All these symptoms should improve considerably within the first few days after surgery.
